Kohli’s Early Years and Breakthrough Phases in T20Is
Kohli made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe in June 2010. Batting at No. 5, he played a composed knock of an unbeaten 26 off 21 balls, helping India chase 111 in Harare.
Since T20Is were more or less limited to the T20 World Cup, India didn’t play a lot of fixtures from 2010 to 2015.
Despite that, he became the first Indian batter to score 1000 runs in T20Is. He needed just 27 innings, making him the fastest Indian batter to 1000 T20I runs.
Kohli aggregated 1016 runs across 28 innings from 2010 to 2015, the 11th-most by a batter in T20Is in this period.
His run tally included nine fifties, the joint second-most by a batter in this phase.
Kohli had the third-highest batting average from 2010 to 2015 in T20Is, scoring at 44.17 (minimum 20 innings batted).
His strike rate of 132.63 was the second-highest by an Indian batter from 2010 to 2015 (minimum 100 balls faced).
Kohli scored 471 of the 1016 runs in 2012, the second-most by a batter in T20Is that year.
His four fifties were the joint second-most by a batter in T20Is in 2012. This even included his maiden T20I fifty, a 48-ball 68 against Sri Lanka in the Pallekele one-off T20I.
In 2014, Kohli top-scored in the T20 World Cup, scoring 319 runs, including four fifties, across six innings.
His 319 runs are the second-most by an Indian batter in a T20 World Cup edition.
Overall, Kohli scored 385 runs in seven innings in 2014, the third-most by a batter in T20Is that year.
He averaged a whopping 96.25, the highest by a batter in T20Is in 2014 (minimum five innings batted). He crossed 20 runs in each of the seven innings he batted, with his five fifties the most by a batter in 2014.
Kohli’s Peak Performance and Record Years in T20Is

He had a mind-boggling average of 106.83, the highest by a batter in T20Is in 2016 (minimum 10 innings batted). This is also the highest batting average by a batter in a calendar year in T20Is.
Kohli is the only batter to average above 100 and strike at 140-plus in a calendar year in T20Is. His strike rate of 140.26 was the third-highest by an Indian batter in 2016 (minimum 100 balls faced).
Kohli scored 273 of his 641 runs in the 2016 T20 World Cup, the second-most by a batter in this tournament.
He averaged an impressive 136.5, the second-highest by a batter in a single T20 World Cup edition (minimum five innings batted).

His strike rate of 121.96 was, however, the second-lowest by an Indian batter in 2018 (minimum 100 balls faced).

Kohli was back in form in 2019, scoring 466 runs, the most by an Indian and the third-most by a full-member batter in T20Is that year.

Kohli’s Performance from 2020 to 2024 in T20Is
2020 and 2021 were pretty identical years for Kohli in terms of runs scored. He was the second-highest run-scorer for India in both years, with 295 and 299 runs, respectively.
His average of 74.75 was the highest by a full-member batter and fourth-highest by any batter in 2021 (minimum five innings batted).

Kohli added another 296 runs in six innings to top score in the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Overall, the right-hander smashed eight fifty-plus scores, the third-most by a batter in 2022.
He also had the second-highest batting average of 55.78 among full-member batters and overall the fourth-highest among all batters in 2022 (minimum 10 innings batted).
In between, Kohli surpassed the 4000-run mark, the first man to get there in T20Is. He remains the fastest to 4000 runs in T20Is, taking 107 outings.
After missing out on T20I action in 2023, he returned to the squad in the lead-up to the 2024 T20 World Cup. But he had a patchy year, with just a single fifty.
That one fifty, 76 off 59 balls, proved crucial as it helped India beat South Africa to win the 2024 T20 World Cup. That innings also marked the end of Kohli’s remarkable T20I career.
