Iyer’s Debut and Early Years Performance in T20Is
Iyer had a rather quiet debut in T20Is. In fact, he did not even get a chance to bat against New Zealand in the 2017 Delhi T20I.
He had to wait almost two years for his maiden T20I fifty. He scored 62 off 33 balls against Bangladesh in the 2019 Nagpur T20I.
Iyer scored 143 runs across eight innings at a strike rate of 145.91. This was the third-highest strike rate by an Indian batter in 2019 (minimum 50 balls faced).
Iyer’s T20I Run-Scoring Milestones in 2020 and 2022
The right-hander was the third-highest run-scorer for India in 2020, with 203 runs in nine innings. His strike rate of 135.33 was also the third-highest for India in 2020 (minimum 100 balls faced).
Iyer also smashed his first fifty in an away T20I. He scored an unbeaten 58 off 29 balls against New Zealand in the 2020 Auckland T20I.
2021 was a quiet year for Iyer, as he managed to score 151 runs across six outings.
The right-hander, however, bounced back in 2022, aggregating 463 runs, including three fifties, in 17 innings. He was the sixth-highest run-getter for India in 2022.
Iyer smashed three of his four fifties in consecutive innings against Sri Lanka in the 2022 home series. This made him the third Indian batter to score three or more fifties in a row against Sri Lanka in T20Is. He also became only the second batter to score three consecutive fifties against Sri Lanka in a bilateral T20I series.
Iyer aggregated 204 runs, the most runs by an Indian batter against Sri Lanka in a bilateral T20I series.
Iyer’s Injury Break and 2026 Captaincy Return in T20I
Iyer missed a major chunk of action in 2023 due to a lower-back issue. While he returned to the squad in late 2023, he was left out of the squad for the next two years.
Iyer returned to the fold in June 2026 as India’s new T20I captain. Since then has delivered some crucial knocks in the middle order.
He even brought up his career-best score of an unbeaten 80 off 49 balls against England in the 2026 Bristol T20I.
He scored 218 runs on the 2026 England tour, the second-most by an Indian captain against England in a bilateral T20I series.
