Samson’s Early T20I Career and Long-Term Struggles
Samson made his debut T20I against Zimbabwe in 2015. He managed 19 runs off 24 balls in a forgettable debut.
It was only after almost five years that Samson returned to the fold. But he got sparse opportunities from January 2020 to July 2024.
In that lean patch, Samson scored his maiden T20I fifty in 2022. He aggregated 77 off 42 balls against Ireland in the Dublin T20I.
Samson accumulated 374 runs in 22 innings till June 2024. This is the fewest runs scored by an Indian batter from his debut to June 2024 in T20Is.
Samson’s Record-Breaking T20I Performance 2024
Then Samson delivered an impactful performance in 2024. He was India’s top run-scorer, with 436 runs in 12 innings.
His 436 runs included three centuries, the joint-most by a batter in a calendar year in T20Is.
Samson scored three hundreds within five innings, two of which came in consecutive outings: 111 vs BAN and 107 vs SA. This made him only the fourth batter to score centuries in consecutive T20I innings.
His other century, an unbeaten 109, also came against South Africa. This made him the first Indian batter to score two centuries in a bilateral T20I series.
He also achieved the second-highest strike rate in T20Is in 2024, going at 180.16 (minimum 200 balls faced). This was the highest strike rate by a full-member batter that year.
Samson’s average of 43.60 was also the second-highest by an Indian batter in 2024, averaging 43.60 (minimum 10 innings batted).
His 31 sixes in 2024 were also the most by an Indian batter in the shortest format that year.
Samson’s Subsequent T20I Form Slump and Resurgence
2025 was again a disappointing year, scoring 222 runs across 11 outings.
His strike rate of 126.85 was the third-lowest by an Indian batter in 2025 (minimum 100 balls faced). And his average of 20.18 was the second-worst by an Indian in 2025 (minimum 10 innings batted).
In 2026, Samson became only the fourth Indian opener to score more than 500 runs in a calendar year in T20Is.
