Largest Win Margin in T20Is (by Runs)

You must have seen teams easily chasing huge totals in the T20I format. But that may not be the case every time.

Chasing a huge score can pressurise the batters, resulting in a poor start or loss of wickets. And if this happens, then the bowling team can bundle them out for paltry scores and register big wins.

So, here are the top 10 instances of teams registering the largest win margin by runs in T20Is.

Key Insights on Greatest Victory Margins in T20I Cricket

Record-Breaking Team Totals and Run Margins

Zimbabwe hold the record for the largest run margin win in T20Is. They first ran up 344 for 4 before bowling out Gambia for 54 to win by a massive margin of 290 runs in 2024.

Zimbabwe’s 344 for 4 in the first innings against Gambia is the highest team total in T20Is.

Nepal’s 273-run win against Mongolia came on the back of stellar batting in the first innings, as they posted 314 for 3 in 20 overs. This was the first-ever 300-plus total in T20Is.

Nigeria (271/4) scripted a 264-run win in 2024 by bowling out Ivory Coast for a mere seven runs, the lowest team total in T20I cricket.

The Czech Republic became the first team to win a T20I match by a 200-plus run margin. They folded Turkey for 21 runs while defending 278 for 4 and won by 257 runs in the 2019 Continental Cup.

Global Dominance and Team Performance Trends

Japan (vs Mongolia) and Spain (vs Croatia) have defeated an opponent team by 180 or more runs in two T20I matches each.

Japan are the only team to win three or more matches by 180 or more runs in T20Is.

Cameroon and Mongolia have faced three or more defeats by a margin of more than 170 runs in T20Is.

Spain, meanwhile, have pulled off the largest win by balls remaining in T20Is. They overhauled an 11-run target against the Isle of Man with 118 balls to spare in 2023. Spain’s two-ball run chase is the quickest by a team in T20Is.

Historic Milestone Victories in T20 World Cups

Sri Lanka became the first team to beat a team by more than a 100-run margin in T20Is. Sri Lanka achieved this feat in the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup, as they defeated Kenya by 172 runs. This is also the biggest win margin by runs in the T20 World Cup.

The largest run margin in a T20I match involving two full-member teams belongs to India. The Men in Blue defeated New Zealand by 168 runs in the 2023 Ahmedabad T20I.
