Kuldeep’s Impressive Run from 2017 to 2019 in ODIs

Kuldeep’s debut was shadowed by rain, as the first ODI in Port of Spain in 2017 couldn’t give him a chance to bowl.

He ended the 2017 West Indies tour with eight wickets in four innings. This is the second-most wickets by an Indian left-arm spinner against the West Indies in an ODI bilateral series.

Kuldeep went past his own record in 2018 when the West Indies toured India. He claimed nine wickets across four outings, the joint-most by an Indian left-arm spinner against the Caribbean side in an ODI bilateral series.

Kuldeep finished 2017 with 22 scalps, the fourth-most by an Indian bowler in ODIs that year. He was the fifth-highest wicket-taker among all spinners in ODIs in 2017.

His bowling average of 24.77 was the lowest (minimum 10 innings) and his strike rate of 30.45 was the second-lowest (minimum 300 balls bowled) by an Indian bowler in 2017.

Kuldeep started 2018 with a haul of 17 wickets in the six-match series against South Africa. This is the most wickets by an Indian bowler against the Proteas in an ODI bilateral series.

Later on the England tour, he delivered his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs. He claimed 6 for 25 against England in the 2018 Nottingham ODI. This is also his best bowling figures in ODIs.

He wrapped up the England tour with nine wickets in three matches. This is the most wickets by an Indian bowler against England in a three-match ODI bilateral series.

Kuldeep then added 10 wickets in the 2018 Asia Cup, the joint third-most by an Indian bowler in a single edition of the continental tournament.

He ended 2018 as India’s leading wicket-taker, taking 45 wickets in 19 innings. Overall, he was the second-highest wicket-taker in ODIs in 2018.

His average of 17.77 was only bettered by Rashid Khan (14.45) and Jasprit Bumrah (16.63) in 2018 (minimum 10 innings). His strike rate of 22.97 was the fourth-lowest by a bowler in 2018 (minimum 300 balls bowled).

Kuldeep claimed 10 of his 32 scalps in 2019 against Australia in the five-match home series. This is the most wickets taken by an Indian bowler against Australia in a bilateral ODI series.

His 32 wickets were the third-most by an Indian bowler in ODIs in 2019. His average of 34.68 (minimum 10 innings) and strike rate of 39 (minimum 300 balls bowled) were the fourth-highest among Indian bowlers in 2019.


Kuldeep’s Noteworthy ICC Tournament Performances in 2023 and 2025

Covid-19 put a break on Kuldeep’s incredible run. He managed to pick 20 wickets in 17 innings from 2020 to 2022. This was the fifth-most wickets by an Indian bowler in ODIs in these three years combined.

Kuldeep was back to his best in 2023. He claimed his second five-wicket haul in September, taking 5 for 25 against Pakistan in the 2023 Asia Cup.

He later took 15 wickets in 11 innings in the 2023 Cricket World Cup. This is the joint second-most wickets by an Indian spinner in an ODI World Cup edition.

He ended up with 49 wickets in 29 innings in 2023, the most by any bowler in ODIs that year. This is also the fourth-most wickets by an Indian bowler in a calendar year in ODIs.

Kuldeep is one of the three Indian bowlers to take 40-plus wickets each in two calendar years in ODIs.

The left-arm wrist-spinner was India’s third-highest wicket-taker in the 2025 Champions Trophy. He took seven scalps in five innings in the title-winning run.

His seven wickets are the fourth-most by an Indian bowler in a Champions Trophy edition.

He closed out 2025 with 19 wickets in 11 innings, the second-most for India in ODIs that year. His average of 29 (minimum five innings) and strike rate of 32.89 (minimum 300 balls bowled) were the third-lowest by an Indian bowler in 2025.
