Shubman Gill Captaincy Record in Test

Gill took over the Test captaincy from Rohit Sharma and has made a phenomenal start, both as a leader and a batter.

Making his Test captaincy debut at Headingley, Leeds, Shubman Gill scored a brilliant century to become just the fifth Indian captain to reach three figures in his inaugural match in charge. He shares this exclusive record with Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Mohammad Azharuddin, and Virat Kohli.

Impressively, four of these five captains—Hazare, Gavaskar, Kohli, and Gill—recorded their debut centuries in SENA nations.

Despite his unbeaten 127, India lost the game by five wickets. However, they managed to draw their very first Test series in challenging English conditions, finishing 2–2.

Gill led India to a 4-1 victory in his debut T20I series as captain on July 2024. On doing so, he became the fourth Indian skipper to win a five-match T20I series.

However, following India’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph under Rohit Sharma, the T20I captaincy passed to Suryakumar Yadav and then to Shreyas Iyer in 2026. Gill was left out of the 2026 T20 World Cup squad as India opted to have him focus on leading the team in the other two formats.
