Muttiah Muralitharan has taken the most wickets against India in ODI cricket. The legendary Sri Lankan spinner picked up 74 scalps across 59 innings.

Australia’s Brett Lee has racked up the most five-wicket hauls against the Men in Blue in ODIs. He added 4 fifers while taking 55 wickets in 30 innings. 

Pakistan’s Aaqib Javed and Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman are the two bowlers with 3 fifers.

Among the six bowlers who have taken 50 ODI wickets against India, Wasim Akram is the only one not to have bagged a five-wicket haul. His best figures were 4 for 35 in a 1999 match in Toronto.


Best Bowling Figures Against India in ODIs

Muralitharan has also registered the best bowling figures versus India. He took seven wickets while conceding 30 runs in a 2000 ODI in Sharjah. This is also the eighth-best bowling figure in all ODIs. 

Aaqib Javed is the other bowler with a seven-wicket haul (7/37 in 1991), including a hattrick at the same venue, against India at the same venue.

West Indies’ Viv Richards has recorded the best bowling figures as a captain against India in ODIs. He returned 6 for 41 in Delhi in the 1989 MRF World Series. 

In all, Richards took 36 wickets against India. Of those, he claimed 35 as a captain, the most by a skipper against India in ODIs.


Venue, Series and Away Performance Records vs India

Out of his 43 scalps against India, Mitchell Johnson picked up 31 in India. This is the most ODI wickets by a bowler against India in India. Johnson took those many wickets in 19 outings at an average of 27.67.

Lee scalped 33 of his 55 wickets in Australia, the most by a bowler against India in a single country in ODIs.

Akram picked up 27 of his 60 wickets at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, the most by a bowler against India at a single venue in ODIs.

West Indies’ Patrick Patterson has claimed the most wickets against India in a bilateral ODI series. He returned 17 scalps in the seven-match India tour in 1987-88.


Best Averages, Economy Rates and Strike Rates vs India in ODIs

Lee also has the best bowling average among the bowlers with 30-plus wickets. He conceded just 21 runs per wicket he took against the Indian team.

Curtly Ambrose’s economy rate of 3.23 is the best by a bowler with 30-plus wickets against India. 

Ambrose’s partner Courtney Walsh (3.24) and Pakistan’s Wasim Akram (3.73), Imran Khan (3.85), and Azhar Mahmood (3.91) are the other bowlers with below-four economy rates.

Naved-ul-Hasan has the best strike rate against India. He struck a wicket after every 25 balls. The Pakistani pacer took 33 wickets in 16 innings.
