Hazlewood’s Test Debut and Breakthrough Year Statistics
Hazlewood made his Test debut in late 2014 against India. And he immediately made a mark with a five-wicket haul (5/68) in the Brisbane Test.
The right-arm pacer continued the momentum in 2015. He picked up 51 wickets in 23 innings, the most for Australia in 2015. His tally was overall the third-highest by any bowler that year.
He had the fifth-lowest bowling average of 23.35 in Tests in 2015 (minimum 10 innings). Hazlewood also had the fourth-best bowling strike rate of 47.47 in 2015 (minimum 1000 balls bowled).
Hazlewood’s Mid-Career Consistency and Overseas Spells
Hazlewood was the second-highest wicket-taker for Australia in 2016, with 42 scalps in 20 innings. His average of 27.85 was also the second-lowest among his countrymen in 2016 (minimum 10 innings).
Hazlewood’s form slightly dipped in 2017 when Australia toured India and Bangladesh. But he was excellent back home, pushing his wickets tally to 34.
His 34 scalps were the second-most by an Australian bowler in 2017. His bowling average of 25.41 was the second-best (minimum 10 innings) and his bowling strike rate of 59.05 was the third-best (minimum 1000 balls bowled) by an Australian in 2017.
He also claimed his career-best innings figures in 2017 on the India tour. He returned 6 for 67 in the third innings of the Bengaluru Test.
Hazlewood was consistent in 2018, although the wickets didn’t come in bunches. He managed to pick 26 wickets, the fourth-most for Australia in 2018.
His average of 33.26 was still the second-best by an Australian bowler in 2018 (minimum 10 innings).
Hazlewood bounced back in 2019 with 33 scalps, the fourth-most by an Aussie bowler that year. His bowling average (23.09) and strike rate (50.12) were the third-lowest for Australia in 2019.
Hazlewood picked up 195 wickets in 95 innings from his debut in 2014 till 2019. He was the sixth-highest wicket-taker in this period in Tests.
Hazlewood’s Recent Form and Injury-Marred Seasons
Hazlewood’s start of the 2020s decade went into dealing with restricted action due to Covid-19 and injuries. He claimed just 22 wickets in seven Tests across 2020, 2021 and 2022.
On his return to action in 2023, Hazlewood picked up 27 wickets in 13 innings, the fourth-most for Australia that year.
He was even better in 2024, even though it was marred by another injury break. He took 35 scalps, the second-most by an Australian bowler in 2024.
The right-arm quick had the lowest bowling average of 13.60 among all bowlers in 2024 (minimum 10 innings). His strike rate of 32.22 was the second-best in 2024 (minimum 1000 balls bowled).
Hazlewood also claimed his best match haul in Tests in 2024. He took nine wickets across two innings for 79 runs against the West Indies in the 2024 Adelaide Test.
Hazlewood returned from injury in 2025, although not for a long period. Across the WTC final and the West Indies tour, he managed to claim 16 wickets in eight innings.
