Key Insights – Key Performances from the No. 3 Spot in IPL

AB de Villiers has registered the highest score by a No. 3 batter in the IPL. He smashed 133 not out for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) against Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2015.

ABD’s 133-run knock was dotted with 19 fours, which are the most by a batter in an IPL innings.

De Villiers’ unbeaten 129, second on the list, came at a strike rate of 248.07, the highest by a No. 3 centurion.

Sanju Samson has the highest score by an Indian No. 3 batter. In 2021, the keeper-batter amassed 119 runs against Punjab Kings.

Marcus Stoinis’ unbeaten 124 against Chennai Super Kings is the highest by a No. 3 batter in a successful run chase. He helped Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) chase a 211-run target in a 2024 match. And you know well who tops the runs-chart in the successful run chases in IPL.

Rajat Patidar is the only No. 3 batter to score a hundred in the IPL playoffs. He scored a match-winning 112 to help RCB beat LSG in the 2023 Eliminator.

There are over 18 instances of No. 3 batters breaching the 100-run mark in an IPL innings.

Among them, de Villiers and Samson have multiple centuries – three each, to be precise. Interestingly, both of them are the only non-openers with two or more centuries.

Will Jacks has brought up the quickest hundred by a No. 3 batter in the IPL. He raced to his maiden IPL hundred off 41 balls for RCB against MI in 2024.
