Batting in overseas conditions can be tough. Teams are not aware of the conditions. So surviving for a long time becomes challenging.

But there have been instances of teams going after huge totals despite the odds. And this article lists the highest team totals recorded in away and neutral Tests.

England hold the record for the highest team total in an away Test. They put up 849 all out against the West Indies in the first innings of the 1930 Kingston Test.

England’s 849 is, overall, the third–highest total by a team in Test cricket history. This is England’s highest total in the longest format.

England have also registered the highest team total in a winning cause in an away Test. They declared their innings on 823 for 7 (declared) against Pakistan in the 2024 Multan Test.

Bangladesh have recorded the highest total in a losing cause in an away Test. They declared the first innings on 595 for 8 against New Zealand in the 2017 Wellington Test.

Highest Run Rates, Longest Innings and Lowest Totals in Away Tests

England have registered the highest run rate in an away Test innings (minimum 100 runs). They chased down a 104-run target at 8.21 in 12.4 overs against New Zealand in the 2024 Christchurch Test.

Pakistan have the record for the longest innings in an away Test. They batted for 319 overs while aggregating 657 for 8 (declared) against the West Indies.

South Africa have aggregated the lowest team total in an away Test. They were bowled out for a mere 30 runs by England in the second innings of the 1924 Birmingham Test.

South Africa’s 30 all-out is the joint third–lowest total by a team in Test cricket.

Neutral Venue Test Records

New Zealand have brought up the highest team total in a neutral Test. They scored 690 all-out against Pakistan in the second innings of the 2014 Sharjah Test.

Pakistan have recorded the lowest team total in a neutral Test innings. Australia bowled them out for 53 runs in the third innings of the 2002 Sharjah Test. Before that, Pakistan surrendered on 59 runs in the first innings.

Pakistan are the only team to score less than 60 runs in both innings of a neutral Test.

South Africa, meanwhile, have achieved the unwanted feat in an away Test. They mustered 36 and 45 in the two innings against Australia in the 1932 Melbourne Test.
