Key Insights – The Double Centurions and Best Captain Innings in WTC 2025-27
Shubman Gill brought up the first double century of the WTC 2025–27 cycle. He hammered a 269-run knock against England in the 2025 Birmingham Test. This is the highest individual score by an Indian captain in Tests.
Gill’s 269 is also the highest individual score by an Indian batter in WTC history.
Gill became the first batter to smash five centuries in the WTC 2025–27 edition. Four of his hundreds came on the England tour, the joint-most by an Indian and by a captain in a Test series. This is also the most number of Test tons a batter has scored in 2025.
Wiaan Mulder of South Africa came up with the only triple century of this edition of WTC. He blasted an unbeaten 367 against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, which is the highest score any batter has hit in WTC 2025-27 edition. This is the highest score in WTC history.
West Indies’ Justin Greaves became the seventh batter to score a double century in the fourth innings of a Test match. He scored an unbeaten 202 to pull off a draw against New Zealand in the 2025 Christchurch Test.
Pathum Nissanka’s 187 against Bangladesh in the 2025 Galle Test is the highest score by an opener in this WTC cycle.
Jamie Smith’s unbeaten 184 against India in the 2025 Birmingham Test is the highest score by a wicketkeeper-batter in this cycle.
Three West Indian batters were involved in scores of 180+ in the same Test series against Sri Lanka in mid-2026. In the 2-match series, the home-side batters Amir Jangoo (233), Justin Greaves (180), and Roston Chase (194) all scored 180+, helping the West Indies win 1–0.
Joe Root brought up his 16th 150-plus score in the 2025 Manchester Test against India.
Bangladesh’s Najmul Hossain Shanto became the first batter to score two centuries in the same Test in the 2025–27 WTC edition. He scored 148 and 125* against Sri Lanka in the 2025 Galle Test. Najmul is also the first Bangladeshi batter to score twin-centuries in Test cricket twice.
Pant and Gill are the other batters with twin centuries in the ongoing WTC cycle.
Pant, in fact, became the first Indian wicketkeeper-batter to smash twin centuries in the same Test match.
Gill, meanwhile, became the third Indian skipper to bring up two hundreds in the same Test match.
