Ricky Ponting made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in December 1995. He had a memorable start to his career, but fell short of a century on debut. He scored 96 in the second innings of the 1995 Perth Test.

Ponting’s wait for his maiden century stretched for more than one and a half years. And it came on the 1997 Ashes tour.
The right-hander smashed 127 against England in the 1997 Leeds Test, helping Australia take a lead in the six-match series.
Ponting finished 1997 with 497 runs in 11 innings. He averaged 49.7, the second-highest for Australia in 1997 (minimum 10 innings batted).
Ponting struggled in 1998, ending up with 382 runs across 14 outings. His average of 29.38 was the worst among the Australians who batted at least 10 times in 1998.
Ponting, however, bounced back in 1999. He started the year with a 104-run knock against the West Indies in the Bridgetown Test. He then added three more tons.

The right-hander missed a major chunk of action in 2000 due to an ankle injury. And on his return, he struggled to maintain consistency throughout 2001.
While Ponting scored 772 runs in 24 innings in 2001, his average of 38.60 was the lowest by an Australian and the fourth-lowest by any batter that year.
But then Ponting hit his peak from 2002 to 2008, with 2007 being the exception due to injuries.

2004 wasn’t a smooth ride, but Ponting delivered his career-best year in 2005. He was once again the top run-getter and century-scorer, with 1544 runs and six centuries.
Ponting’s 1544 runs in 2005 are the fourth-most by a captain in a calendar year in Tests. And this is the second-highest run-tally by an Australian batter in a year in Tests.
Ponting continued the fine run in 2006 as well. He was the third-highest run-getter (1333) and the second-highest century-maker (7) in 2006. His average of 88.86 was also the second-best by any batter that year (minimum 10 innings).

Ponting finally ended up with 13378 runs in 287 innings, the third-most runs by any batter in Tests. His 41 centuries are the joint third-most in Tests.
The former Australian captain returned from injuries in 2008 and was the third-highest run-getter that year in Tests.
