Head’s Early Career Test Runs and Initial Breakthroughs (2018–2020)
Head experienced two extremes on his Test debut. First, he bagged a duck and then scored 72 against Pakistan in the 2018 Dubai Test.
He closed out 2018 with 339 runs across 10 innings, including three fifties.
Head started 2019 with three consecutive fifties against Sri Lanka. It even included his maiden Test century. He hammered 161 in the first innings of the Canberra Test. He scored 84 and an unbeaten 59 on either side of the ton.
Then a flop Ashes tour followed. The southpaw managed 191 runs across eight innings, including a lone fifty.
Head rounded off 2019 with his second century – 114 vs New Zealand, MCG – to take his total run tally to 742 runs in 17 innings.
His 742 runs were the third-most by an Australian batter in 2019. His average of 49.46 was also the third-best among his countrymen.
He then had an underwhelming run in 2020, barely managing 72 runs.
Head’s Resurgence and Peak Batting Form in Test Cricket (2021–2023)
After spending close to a year outside the team, Head made a strong comeback in late 2021.
He smashed 152 on his return against England in the second innings of the 2021 Brisbane Test.
The left-hander carried his form into 2022. He crossed the 90-run mark four times, converting two of those into centuries.
And one of those knocks turned out to be his career-best. He smashed 175 against the West Indies in the first innings of the 2022 Adelaide Test.
Head finished 2022 with 655 runs at an average of 50.38 in 15 innings. His runs and average were the fourth-most by an Australian batter in 2022.
2023 was even better. He delivered his best year in Tests, scoring 919 runs in 23 innings, the third-most by any batter in 2023.
Head’s Recent Test Match Consistency and Ashes Dominance (2024–2026)
Head wasn’t consistent in 2024, though he still hammered three centuries, the most by him in a calendar year.
He even top-scored for Australia in 2024, with 608 runs at an average of 40.53.
Head found his rhythm in 2025, finishing with 817 runs, the second-most by a batter that year.
His two centuries were the joint-most for Australia in 2025. Both hundreds (123 & 170) came against England in the home Ashes series.
Head added another century (163) in the Ashes to start his 2026 on a stronger note.
